Stick style: Style of residential design popular in the U.S. in the 1860s and '70s, a precursor to the Shingle style. camp style: An aesthetic sensibility that regards something as appealing or humorous because of its ridiculousness to the viewer. The concept is related to kitsch, and things with camp appeal may also be described as being "cheesy". When the usage appeared, in 1909, it denoted: ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical, and effeminate behaviour, and, by the middle of the 1970s, the definition comprised: banality, artifice, mediocrity, and ostentation so extreme as to have perversely sophisticated appeal. American writer Susan Sontag's essay Notes on "Camp" (1964) emphasised its key elements as: artifice, frivolity, naïve middle-class pretentiousness, and ‘shocking’ excess. Biedermeier style: Style of German and Austrian art, furniture, and decoration that developed 1815 to 1848. Gottlieb ("Papa") Biedermeier was a fictional cartoon character, the comic symbol of middle-class comfort, with an emphasis on family life and the pursuit of hobbies. The subject matter of Biedermeier paintings, which were either genre or historical, was treated sentimentally; Carl Spitzweg (1808-85) is the best-known of the Biedermeier painters. Chippendale style: Style of furniture derived from designs by Thomas Chippendale. The term specifically refers to English furniture made in a modified Rococo style in the 1750s and '60s, though Chippendale also designed furniture in Gothic and Chinese styles. Some of his designs are adapted from the Louis XV style. Furniture based on his designs was also made in Europe and the American colonies
Empire style: Style of furniture and interior decoration that flourished in France during the First Empire (1804-14). It corresponds to the Regency style in England. Responding to the desire of Napoleon for a style inspired by imperial Rome, the architects Charles Percier (1764-1838) and Pierre Fontaine (1762-1853) decorated his state rooms with Classical styles of furniture and ornamental motifs, supplemented by sphinxes and palm leaves to commemorate his Egyptian campaigns. The style influenced the arts (Jacques-Louis David in painting, Antonio Canova in sculpture, the Arc de Triomphe in architecture) and fashion and spread quickly throughout Europe
Flamboyant style: Phase of late Gothic architecture in 15th-century France and Spain. It evolved out of the Rayonnant style's increasing emphasis on decoration. Its most conspicuous feature is the dominance in stone window tracery of a flamelike S-shaped curve. Wall surface was reduced to the minimum to allow an almost continuous window expanse. Structural logic was obscured by covering buildings with elaborate tracery. Attractive French examples include Notre-Dame d'Épine near Châlons-sur-Marne, Saint-Maclou in Rouen ( 1500-14), and the northern spire of Chartres Cathedral. Spanish Flamboyant architects developed their own intricate forms of vaulting with curvilinear patterns; the Capilla del Condestable in Burgos Cathedral (1482-94) and Segovia Cathedral (begun 1525) provide examples. Flamboyant Gothic, which became increasingly ornate, gave way in France to Renaissance forms in the 16th century
Fujiwara style: Japanese sculptural style of the late Heian period (897-1185). The style of the principal icons accorded with the emotional appeal of Pure Land Buddhism, introduced to counter the older esoteric sects. The sculpted figures, though still full and fleshy, were more elegant and heavily polychromed, with elaborate cut-gold (kirikane) patterns in the drapery. The facial type was aristocratic. Delicacy of expression was achieved by a joined-wood technique invented by Jch. Interest in decorative effects can be seen in the applied jewelry, which in earlier periods had been painted or modeled on the sculpture's surface
Geometric style: Style of vase painting that flourished in Athens 1000-700 BC. Vases decorated in this style feature horizontal bands filled with geometric patterns such as zigzags, triangles, and swastikas in dark paint on a light ground. The rhythmic effect is similar to that of basketry. The abstract motifs developed into stylized animal and human forms in such narrative scenes as funerals, dances, and boxing matches. Small bronze and clay figurines, elaborately decorated fibulas, and limestone seals were also produced. The patterns remained popular and influenced much later Greek art

Hiberno-Saxon style: Decorative style that resulted when Irish (Hibernian) monks went to England in 635. It mingled the Celtic decorative tradition curvilinear and "trumpet" forms, scrolls, spirals, and a double-curve motif with the interlaced zoomorphic patterns and bright coloration of the pagan Anglo-Saxons. Mediterranean art entered as an element when St. Augustine of Canterbury's mission arrived from Rome, introducing the human figure in art objects, but the style's basic characteristics remained geometric, with interlaced designs and areas of bright colour, as seen in the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells. Jogan style: Japanese sculptural style of the early Heian period, seen primarily but not exclusively in Buddhist sculptures. The massive figures, carved from single blocks of wood, are columnar, erect, and symmetrical and have large round faces, large lips, wide noses, and wide eyes, almost geometrically simplified. The drapery, composed of alternating series of small and large waves, is its most distinguishing feature. The technique was first seen on the drapery of the colossal image of the Buddha at Bmn, Afg.; Chinese and Japanese pilgrims brought back holy images and used them as prototypes for their own sacred images
Louis XIII style: Style of the visual arts produced in France during the reign of Louis XIII, including the regency of his mother, Marie de Médicis, who introduced much of the art of her native Italy. The Mannerism of Italy and Flanders was so influential that a true French style did not develop until the mid-17th century, when the influence of Caravaggio was assimilated by Georges de La Tour and the Le Nain brothers, and the influence of the Carracci brothers was extended by Simon Vouet, who trained the academic painters of the next generation. The sculpture of the period was undistinguished. The most prolific area of the arts was architecture. Here, too, the Italian influence is seen, as in the Palais de Justice at Rennes and the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, both designed by Salomon de Brosse, and the chapel of the Sorbonne in Paris, designed by Jacques Lemercier. Louis XIV style: Style of the visual arts produced in France during the reign of Louis XIV. In 1648 Charles Le Brun founded the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, which rigidly dictated styles for the rest of the reign. Mission style: or Spanish Mission style Style of the missions established by Spanish Franciscans in Florida, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and especially California (1769-1823). Their portals were often handsomely ornate, but the overall impression is one of simple geometric volumes of white stucco complemented by sharply incised windows and simplified interior details. Mission style also commonly refers to a style largely created in the early 20th century by Gustav Stickley, who marketed a line of plain, heavy oak furnishings inspired by those of the Spanish missions, as well as a series of house designs to suit modest incomes

Perpendicular style: Phase of late Gothic architecture in England roughly parallel in time to the French Flamboyant style. The style, concerned with creating rich visual effects through decoration, was characterized by a predominance of vertical lines in stone window tracery, enlargement of windows to great proportions, and conversion of the interior stories into a single unified vertical expanse. Fan vaults, springing from slender columns or pendants, became popular. The oldest surviving example of the style is probably the choir of Gloucester Cathedral (begun 1335). Other major monuments include King's College Chapel, Cambridge (1446-1515), and the chapel of Henry VII in Westminster Abbey. In the 16th century, the grafting of Renaissance elements onto the Perpendicular style resulted in the Tudor style
Proto-Geometric style: Visual art style of ancient Greece that signaled the reawakening of technical proficiency and conscious creative spirit after the collapse of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, around the 12th century BC. The vocabulary of the style was limited to circles, arcs, triangles, and wavy lines, all derived from Minoan-Mycenaean representations of aquatic and plant life. On pottery, these design elements were carefully placed in horizontal bands, mainly at a vase's shoulder or belly. Its lower portion was usually either left plain or painted in a solid glossy black pigment inherited from Bronze Age artists
Queen Anne style: A style of architecture and furniture reviving elements of Queen Anne design, popular especially in England in the late 19th century. Style of English decorative arts that reached its apex during the reign (1702-14) of Queen Anne. The most distinctive feature of Queen Anne furniture is the cabriole leg, shaped in a double curve (the upper part convex, the lower concave) and ending in either a claw-and-ball or paw foot. The Queen Anne chair is identifiable by a splat back curved to fit the hollow of the spine. The wood used was almost exclusively walnut, often embellished with marquetry, inlay, veneering, and lacquerwork. Ornamentation motifs include scallop shells, scrolls, Asian figures, and animals
Regency style: Style in the decorative arts and architecture produced in England during the regency (1811-20) and reign (1820-30) of George IV. Designers borrowed both structural and ornamental elements from Greek and Roman antiquity. Egyptian motifs, inspired by Napoleon's Egyptian campaign of 1798, became part of the Regency fashion. A resurgence of a taste for chinoiserie is seen in imitation bamboo and in "japanned" lacquerwork. The prince's taste for French furniture popularized pieces ornamented with brass marquetry in the French style. Ornamentation relied on rich contrasts of exotic wood veneers and application of metal or painting rather than extensive carving

Shingle style: In the U.S., a style of wood-shingle-covered domestic architecture of the 1870s and '80s. The style grew out of the Queen Anne and Stick styles and was stimulated by a revived interest in colonial American architecture. The small size of the shingle made it easy to cover a variety of shapes. Tempyo style: Japanese sculptural style of the Nara period (710-784), greatly influenced by the Chinese imperial style of the Tang dynasty (618-907). Many supreme sculptural achievements of Japanese Buddhist art were created during this era, often in unbaked clay, solid wood, and lacquered cloth molded on a removable core (a technique called kanshitsu, or dry lacquer). Tempy style shows a closer fusion of parts into a unified whole than is found in works of the Early Nara period, giving a sense of activity and realistic observation; the new realism is especially notable in portrait sculpture
Tori style: In Japanese art, a style of sculpture that emerged during the Asuka period (552-645) and lasted into the Nara period (710-784). Derived from the style of the Chinese Northern Wei dynasty (AD 386-534), Tori was named after a sculptor of Chinese descent whose only known piece is a Buddhist triad (623). Works in the Tori style are characterized by slender, elegant bodies, a strong linear interest in drapery, and a tendency toward squatness in the proportion of the faces and also in the relation of the body to the feet
